Bible Sabbath Sunday Last weekend in October - 27th/28th
Bible Society NSW will launch its inaugural ‘Annual Bible Sabbath/Sunday’ on the weekend of October 27th & 28th.
“We want to dedicate one Sabbath/Sunday in the year to promote the work of Bible Society NSW in bringing people to know Jesus,” said Daniel Willis, Bible Society NSW CEO.
“A few weeks ago, one of my staff members told me that a Pastor had said, ‘the only time I ever hear from the Bible Society is when they need money!’ That comment bothered me. We are much more than that! The purpose of the Bible Sabbath/Sunday weekend is to inform the church family of the work of Bible Societies worldwide and their life giving role to translate, produce, distribute, and help people interact with God’s Word,” said Daniel.
“To achieve the Great Commission of Matthew 28 to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’, we must create and distribute Bibles in the appropriate language and format that people can use to come to know Jesus personally. This takes more than money – we also rely on people’s generous offering of their time, talent and prayer,” he said.
Seventy percent of Bible distribution takes place in developing countries. Scripture-in-use programs are being utilised all over the world to help people to learn to read and write so that they can come to a personal relationship with Jesus. In these circumstances the poor simply cannot afford any price we decide upon so we simply give the Bibles away! Their new learnt literacy skills give them new life, breaking the cycle of grinding poverty.
In NSW, Bible Society is involved in the following activities:
Provide the Bible in print, audio and video/DVD formats.
Supply specially written Bibles to surfers, backpackers, the hearing impaired in signed language, work place Bible study groups, scripture teachers, members of the defence forces, emergency services, Commonwealth and Olympic games competitors.
Record the Bible in audio format on CDs, cassettes, DVDs as well as formats for the internet and SMS messaging on mobile phones.
Outreach to the wider secular community through multi-media events such as the Jesus. All about life campaign in an effort to bring new members into congregations.
“The time, talent, money and prayer that our supporters share with Bible Society NSW enables us to offer the church family these resources and the opportunity to empower you in your ministry, to support your congregation, scripture teachers, lay leaders and Bible study groups with these Bible related resources,” Daniel said.
