Also present on the day will be translation consultant and historian, Rev Dr John Harris, who has played a leading role in efforts to salvage each of these special copies of God’s Word. He has an intimate knowledge of the collection and the colourful and intriguing stories woven around them.
The significant unifying feature of all these Bibles is that they are now Australian. Some were brought here. Some originated here. Some belonged to famous Australians. But all are part of Australian history and part of our national heritage.
Bibles inscribed in Elizabeth and Governor Macquarie’s own hand will be on display at the exhibition.
St John’s Anglican Cathedral dates back to Governor Macquarie’s time, making it one of the oldest churches in NSW. Major heritage preservation works started in January, will be completed in time to host the Heritage Bible Exhibition.
Nearly 200 years later, Bible Society is still a vigorous organisation with a vision for providing Bibles to all who need them ‘in a language they understand and at a price they can afford’.
